About The Jackson Laboratory
Overview
The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is a nonprofit biomedical research institution, established in 1929 in Bar Harbor, Maine. As an independent 501(c)3 organization, our mission is to advance precise genomic solutions for disease while empowering the global biomedical community in the collective pursuit of improving human health.
We are a global team of nearly 3,000 professionals, operating across 11 locations, including Maine, Connecticut, California, Japan, China, and remote settings worldwide. With a 2023 operating budget of $628 million, JAX plays a significant role in supporting local communities and driving scientific innovation.
Research Excellence
JAX is home to over 60 faculty members leading diverse and multidisciplinary research programs, including:
-
The National Cancer Institute-designated JAX Cancer Center
-
Specialized research initiatives focused on addiction, aging, Alzheimer’s and dementias, genomics and computational biology, precision genetics, and rare diseases
Since 1983, JAX has maintained its designation as an NCI-designated Cancer Center, making it one of only seven institutions in the U.S. recognized for its fundamental contributions to cancer research. Our scientists have been at the forefront of groundbreaking medical advancements, including:
-
Bone marrow and organ transplants
