Key Responsibilities of an Inpatient Medical Coder

  • Review and code inpatient medical charts using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS.

  • Follow AHIMA’s Standards of Ethical Coding and official guidelines.

  • Accurately abstract clinical details, discharge data, and facility-specific elements.

  • Maintain coding accuracy above 95.5% for diagnoses and procedures.

  • Create compliant physician queries when clarification is required.

  • Stay updated with AHA Coding Clinics, CMS directives, and quarterly education.

  • Resolve coding-related issues to support DNFB performance goals.


Skills and Expertise Required for Inpatient Medical Coders

To succeed as an Inpatient Medical Coder, candidates should bring strong knowledge of MS-DRG and APR DRG reimbursement structures, proficiency in physician query writing, and the ability to navigate EMRs, encoders, and other coding tools. You’ll also collaborate closely with CDI and quality teams to ensure complete and accurate documentation.


Education, Certifications, and Experience for Inpatient Medical Coders

  • 1–3 years of inpatient coding experience in an acute care setting (required).

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required); Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • AHIMA RHIT, RHIA, or AAPC CCS credential required.


Compensation & Benefits for Inpatient Medical Coders

  • Pay range: $24.82 – $37.23 per hour (based on qualifications and experience).
