Key Responsibilities of an Inpatient Coder II

  • Assign and sequence ICD-10-CM/PCS codes with precision.

  • Apply definitions of principal diagnoses and assign MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, and POA indicators.

  • Use encoder/grouper tools, CAC software, and EMR systems to ensure accuracy.

  • Abstract clinical data for client, state, and federal reporting needs.

Skills and Expertise Needed for Inpatient Coder II

Education and Experience for Inpatient Coder II

  • High school diploma or GED required (Associate or Bachelor’s degree in HIM or coding preferred).

  • AHIMA or AAPC coding credential required (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC, or CIC).

  • Minimum of 5 years inpatient facility coding experience.

  • At least 2 years in a Level 2 trauma center and/or academic teaching medical center.
