Inpatient Coder – Remote (U.S. Residents Only)

The Inpatient Coder plays a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of medical record coding for inpatient services. This position is responsible for assigning the correct ICD-10-CM/PCS and DRG codes in accordance with official coding guidelines and hospital policies. The coder will also review and abstract essential clinical and demographic data to support reporting and reimbursement processes. Attention to detail, strong coding knowledge, and a commitment to compliance are key to success in this role.

Working closely with clinical documentation and compliance teams, the Inpatient Coder ensures all coding and queries are clear, compliant, and support the integrity of patient data. This position demands adherence to HIPAA regulations, Information Security policies, and organizational standards such as ISO 27001:2013. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, maintains high productivity, and demonstrates accuracy in every coding assignment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Code all inpatient medical records accurately using ICD-10-CM/PCS and assign appropriate DRGs.

  • Abstract and record demographic and clinical data elements required for reporting.

  • Write precise and compliant, non-leading coding queries when documentation is unclear.

  • Ensure quality, accuracy, and timeliness of all coding in line with client and regulatory standards.

  • Adhere to all information security, HIPAA, and internal organizational compliance policies.

Qualifications:

  • Certification from AHIMA or AAPC (CCS, CPC, or CIC).

  • 2–4 years of inpatient coding experience in an acute care hospital setting.

  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and understanding of DRG reimbursement methodology.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Minimum education: High School Diploma (Associate degree in Health Information preferred).
