Key Responsibilities of an Inpatient Coding Specialist
- Accurately assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient medical records.
- Apply MS-DRG coding classification systems to ensure precise documentation and reimbursement.
- Maintain coding accuracy above 95% quality standards while meeting productivity targets.
- Work independently to analyze and code inpatient charts in alignment with official coding guidelines.
- Adapt to workflow changes, system updates, and client-specific requirements efficiently.
- Utilize remote-based technologies such as VPNs, multi-factor authentication, and video conferencing tools to maintain secure and effective communication.
- Participate in team meetings, ongoing training sessions, and data management tasks using Excel and Outlook.
Qualifications for the Inpatient Coding Specialist Role
- Active AHIMA or AAPC certification (CPC, CIC, or COC).
- Minimum of 2 years of recent inpatient coding experience in an acute care environment.
- Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and MS-DRG classification systems.
- Proficient with remote connectivity tools and office software applications.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated.
