Position Summary:

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is hiring a dedicated Interpreter/Translator to bridge language gaps between school personnel and families who use a language other than English. This role supports student academic achievement, family engagement, and equitable access to school services. The successful candidate will provide interpretation (spoken) and translation (written) services across schools and district offices.

Essential Responsibilities:

Interpretation & Translation

  • Interpret verbal communication at meetings, conferences, IEP sessions, assessments, and parent-teacher interactions

  • Translate school communications, such as letters, flyers, newsletters, forms, and reports

  • Proofread and edit translated content for accuracy and clarity

Family & Community Engagement

  • Facilitate parent understanding of school procedures, curriculum, assessments, and resources

  • Assist families with enrollment, hardship applications, residency appeals, and navigating school systems

  • Support school-home communication via meetings, phone calls, home visits, and school events

  • Build partnerships with Multilingual Learner (ML) families to increase engagement

Collaboration & Support

  • Participate in staff training, meetings, and professional development

  • Assist with administering WIDA Screener testing

  • Maintain documentation for all parent communications and calls

  • Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bilingual in English and another language (Spanish preferred)

  • High school diploma or GED

  • 2+ years of related interpreting/translating experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong command of English and second language grammar, spelling, and vocabulary

  • Familiarity with K–12 curriculum and school processes

  • Proficiency with translation tools, glossaries, and public school terminology

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Cultural sensitivity and strong interpersonal judgment

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage independent tasks

Work Location:

Primarily based at a Charlotte-Mecklenburg school or administrative site; may require travel across district campuses.
