As a System Reliability Engineer, you’ll help ensure that Nelnet’s solutions operate efficiently, securely, and reliably — with a strong focus on automation, system monitoring, and performance optimization.
This role involves working closely with development teams to maintain high-performing systems, automate processes, ensure compliance with internal and external standards, and manage infrastructure in hybrid environments.
Key Responsibilities

Partner with development teams to ensure system reliability and meet service level objectives (SLOs).

Automate processes for system support, releases, and developer experience improvements.

Set up and manage system health monitors, alerts, and performance dashboards.

Participate in technical roadmap discussions, system design, and capacity planning.

Provide post-implementation support, including debugging and performance optimization.

Represent assigned systems across departments and ensure compliance with audit and security standards.

Drive improvements in automation, testing, and deployment strategies.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Experience:
-
5+ years in software engineering or system reliability roles.

Experience with cloud architecture, networking, and infrastructure as code.

Proficiency in Git, CI/CD pipelines, and process automation scripting.

Hands-on experience with RESTful APIs, AWS, Kubernetes, and Linux.

Knowledge of authentication systems (OAuth, OpenID Connect) and monitoring tools (AppDynamics, Splunk).

Preferred: Experience with NIST 800-53 compliance and federal security standards.
