Position Summary

The Language Access Coordinator 1 plays a crucial role in ensuring equitable language access across Allegheny County DHS. This position involves coordinating interpretation services, tracking usage, supporting community engagement, and occasionally providing direct interpreting support.

As a member of the Language Access Unit within the Office of Administration, this role bridges communication gaps for limited English proficient (LEP) clients and supports culturally responsive service delivery across DHS.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage interpretation requests from internal departments and providers

  • Coordinate assignments with Language Service Providers (LSPs)

  • Maintain organized scheduling, follow-ups, and communication with LSPs and staff

  • Provide direct interpretation (in-person, OPI, or VRI) as needed

  • Verify invoices and reconcile interpreter assignment records

  • Track, collect, and report on language services usage (monthly/quarterly)

  • Assist with interpretation for DHS-sponsored events

  • Support training development and delivery related to language access

  • Maintain and update DHS-specific multilingual glossaries

  • Advise staff on cross-cultural communication and equity

  • Represent DHS on local, city, state, and national language access committees

  • Support internal and external language services monitoring efforts

Minimum Qualifications

  • Fluency in Standard English and at least one of the top languages used by DHS clients (e.g., Spanish, Nepali, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, or ASL)

  • Experience in interpreting (required)

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams)

  • Familiarity with local LEP and immigrant communities (preferred)

  • Knowledge of CAT tools (preferred)

  • Experience in human services (preferred)

  • Interpreter certification (preferred)

  • Experience in designing or delivering training (a plus)

Additional Information
