Job Overview:
The Birmingham Public Library is seeking a professional, detail-oriented, and customer-focused Librarian I to join our Northwestern Region team. This position requires knowledge of library principles, strong communication skills, supervisory experience, and a commitment to public service. The role includes managing day-to-day operations, supervising staff, overseeing collections, and developing library programs.
Key Responsibilities:

Report to the Department Head and supervise library staff.

Conduct employee performance reviews, provide training, and support staff development.

Administer library policies and procedures, including circulation and membership management.

Oversee financial procedures, daily transactions, weekly deposits, and monthly reports.

Prepare reports on departmental activities, programs, and community needs.

Provide staff and patron training on library systems and technologies.

Assist patrons with self-checkout systems, hold shelves, and library resources.

Manage meeting room scheduling and enforce usage guidelines.

Participate in collection management and program development.

Represent the library at community meetings and events.

Handle patron complaints and mediate conflicts.

Assess facility needs and report maintenance issues.

Attend department and system-wide meetings; serve on committees and task forces.
Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge of library operations, customer service, and public programming.

Strong problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Proficiency with computers, online databases, social media, and library systems.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 30 lbs, and perform manual library tasks.

Vision sufficient for reading microform and PC monitors.

Dexterity to operate PCs and handle library materials.
