About the Role

We are looking for a customer-focused Library Assistant to join the team at Oxford’s historic Bodleian Old Library and Radcliffe Camera. This is a key front-line role supporting readers and visitors in their use of the library’s world-renowned collections and services. You will play an active part in ensuring high-quality customer service, assisting with book circulation, re-shelving, and collection maintenance across various reading rooms.

This is a physically active role and includes handling boxes of library materials, pushing trolleys, and using ladders or kick-stools to access shelving areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality, professional front-line customer service at library desks

  • Assist readers with enquiries and library navigation

  • Sort, shelve, and maintain library materials with accuracy and care

  • Participate in collection management and library projects

  • Support the smooth operation of the reading rooms

About You

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent

  • Excellent communication skills—confident, courteous, and helpful

  • Good general IT literacy and the ability to learn library systems

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to perform routine tasks accurately

  • Team player who can also work independently under pressure

  • Physically able to carry, lift, and re-shelve materials using ladders and trolleys

  • Previous library experience and knowledge of ALMA or similar databases is desirable (training provided)
