Company Overview
The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) oversees the coordination of services for individuals across New York with developmental disabilities. These include intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, Prader-Willi syndrome, and other neurological conditions.

Duties Description

  • Monitor the health and condition of individuals at your assigned worksite to detect any changes or responses to medications or therapies.

  • Identify symptoms of illness or condition changes and report these to a physician or registered nurse to assist with diagnosis and treatment planning.

  • Measure vital signs including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration using appropriate medical devices such as thermometers, manometers, and stethoscopes.

  • Administer all injectable medications, as well as J-tube and G-tube medications, to assigned individuals.

  • Manage and monitor G-tube and J-tube feedings, including performing tube changes when necessary.

  • Carry out catheterization, tracheostomy care, and deep oral/pharyngeal suctioning as ordered.

  • Assist individuals in collecting specimens such as urine and stool for laboratory analysis.

  • Maintain accurate records and charts documenting treatments administered and the individual’s condition.

  • Conduct inventory checks on medical supplies and medications to ensure timely ordering of replacements.

  • Perform assigned “Direct Care” duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • A license and current registration to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State;

  • A limited permit to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State; or

  • An application filed for a limited permit to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State (available immediately after graduation from an approved Practical Nursing program in New York State).

Additional Information
This role is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Positions under this program may be filled through non-competitive appointments, meaning no exam is required to qualify, only meeting the minimum qualifications.

Salary Details
The posted salary includes the CSEA Grade 10 statutory rate ($45,081), plus special salary adjustments such as Geographic Pay Differential ($13,000), Increased Hiring Rate ($5,852), and Downstate Adjustment ($4,000), totaling approximately $55,322.

Additional Employment Notes:

  • Current New York State employees in a permanent competitive title and eligible for transfer under Civil Service Law Section 70.1 may be appointed as permanent competitive employees.
