Job Overview
SUNY Polytechnic Institute is seeking a Maintenance Assistant (Carpenter) to perform semiskilled carpentry work in the construction, installation, and repair of structures and equipment. This role includes working with wood and other materials such as sheet metal, plastics, and aluminum. Under supervision, the Maintenance Assistant will handle routine maintenance tasks while learning and assisting with journey-level carpentry activities.
Responsibilities

Repair structural woodwork and equipment (doors, windows, stairs, railings, etc.).

Install and repair locks, door closures, hinges, and other door hardware.

Install glass in windows, doors, and partitions.

Build, repair, and install shelving, tables, racks, and bookcases using woodworking machines.

Assist skilled tradespersons with construction and renovation projects.

Build concrete forms, erect partitions, and replace damaged floor/ceiling tiles.

Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Two years of full-time carpentry experience OR completion of a two-year technical carpentry program (e.g., NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program) OR equivalent training/experience.

Ability to read blueprints and use carpenter’s tools.

Valid NYS driver’s license (when required to operate vehicles).
