Job Summary

The Maintenance Carpenter performs preventive and corrective maintenance on EVMS buildings and facilities, with a focus on carpentry, woodworking, and framing. Work also includes plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and other environmental systems. This position plays a key role in maintaining safe, functional, and high-quality facilities for the university community.

Maintenance personnel are classified as essential staff and are required to participate in a rotating on-call schedule. During emergencies or inclement weather, personnel must report to work as needed, even when the university is closed. Some duties may include snow removal (shoveling, dispersing ice melt, or operating snow removal equipment).

Responsibilities

  • Perform carpentry duties, including layout, measurement, and construction of flooring, roofing, drywall, cabinets, shelves, furniture, scaffolding, wooden decks, and steps.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine project requirements.

  • Calculate size and material needs for projects, ensuring accurate measurements and cuts.

  • Collaborate effectively with team members, partners, and customers to achieve project goals.

  • Provide support for building systems maintenance (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and mechanical).

  • Maintain accurate records of time, resources, and assignments.

  • Adapt to changing work environments, priorities, and organizational needs.

  • Report during emergencies or inclement weather as essential personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education/Training: Journeyman-level Carpenter.

  • Experience: At least 5 years of carpentry experience in woodworking and framing (residential, commercial, or municipal construction).

  • Licenses/Certifications:

    • Valid Virginia Driver’s License (must be insurable through EVMS insurance carrier).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in carpentry techniques, woodworking, and framing.

  • Ability to calculate dimensions, proportions, percentages, and apply basic algebra.

  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Adaptability to shifting priorities and changing conditions.

Conditions of Employment

  • Facilities Management employees are considered essential personnel and must work during university closings.

  • Must be able to perform physical tasks related to carpentry and maintenance, including lifting, climbing, and operating equipment.

  • Criminal background check required for final candidate.

Salary

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
