General Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic performs a wide range of preventive and corrective maintenance on hospital facilities and equipment, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. This role also supports renovation and new construction projects while ensuring safety, compliance, and operational excellence across all hospital facilities.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform general, preventive, and corrective maintenance on hospital systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, elevators, grounds, laundry, fire extinguishers, oxygen & vacuum systems).

  • Troubleshoot malfunctions, determine necessary repairs, and initiate work orders.

  • Work from blueprints, schematics, and sketches for projects and repairs.

  • Maintain accurate time, material, and equipment records via CMMS.

  • Train and mentor other maintenance staff; provide leadership in project execution.

  • Maintain vendor relationships for maintenance and renovation projects.

  • Ensure compliance with hospital, accreditation, and safety standards.

  • Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and improvement teams.

HVAC Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, repair, and install HVAC/R systems and related electrical/pneumatic controls.

  • Troubleshoot and maintain computerized building automation systems (DDC).

  • Ensure compliance documentation is completed in CMMS.

  • Train and oversee junior staff on HVAC/R systems.

Plumbing Responsibilities:

  • Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, medical gas lines, traps, valves, and backflow preventers.

  • Perform asbestos removal, pump/heat exchanger repairs, and system reconfigurations for renovations.

  • Provide cost and material estimates for projects.

Electrical Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, repair, and install electrical systems, panels, and circuits.

  • Maintain low-voltage systems (fire alarms, card access, nurse call).

  • Inspect and maintain lighting, emergency generators, and high-voltage switchgear.

  • Perform safety tests and ensure all circuits are code-compliant.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Completion of formal training program required.

Experience:

  • 3–4 years of related maintenance experience required.

Licenses/Certifications (based on specialty):

  • Journeyman License – required (specific license varies by trade).

  • Journeyman Electrician License – preferred if electrician.

  • HVAC/R Journeyman’s License & CFC Universal Certification – required if HVAC/R.

  • Licensed Journeyman Plumber – required if plumber; Master Plumber license preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical documents.

  • Basic math skills (including fractions).

  • Verbal and written communication skills.

  • Basic computer skills preferred.

  • Physically able to lift, climb, kneel, and work in varied hospital environments.
