Position Summary:

The Advanced Medical Coder is responsible for accurately assigning medical codes by reviewing medical records and applying coding guidelines to ensure proper billing and data accuracy. This role includes detailed abstraction, in-depth analysis, and resolving coding-related denials and issues in collaboration with internal and external partners.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes using detailed knowledge of coding systems and guidelines.

  • Analyze medical documentation thoroughly and resolve coding denials and discrepancies.

  • Perform database management including data entry, manipulation, and error correction.

  • Respond promptly to internal and external coding information requests.

  • Identify and communicate documentation improvement opportunities to providers and leadership.

  • Collaborate with clinical staff and vendors for clarification on incomplete or inconsistent documentation.

  • Perform system edit checks and correct errors to ensure data accuracy.

  • Assist with additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a medical coder.

  • Associate’s degree preferred.

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy.

Licenses & Certifications (Preferred):

  • AHIMA credentials such as RHIA, RHIT, or CCS, or

  • AAPC certification such as CPC or

  • Certified Medical Coder (CMC) from Practice Management Institute.
