Company Overview
Originally established in 1985 as the Juneau Alliance for the Mentally Ill (JAMI), JAMHI Health & Wellness, Inc. began as a family-led, grassroots advocacy organization. Its early efforts focused on supporting adults with severe, chronic mental illness while also offering services such as family support, education, information and referral, and anti-stigma initiatives.
In the early 1990s, JAMI (doing business as JAMI/NAMI) expanded to include general mental health and emergency services. By 2000, it was designated as the community behavioral health center for Juneau, Gustavus, Elfin Cove, and Tenakee Springs. In 2002, the organization officially rebranded as JAMHI: Juneau Alliance for Mental Health, Inc.
Throughout the 2000s, JAMHI expanded its services beyond residential and basic care, placing increased emphasis on supporting individuals with co-occurring disorders. The organization implemented evidence-based practices, expanded medical and drop-in services, and introduced same-day access. In 2011, JAMHI received accreditation in recognition of its growing capabilities.
In 2015, JAMHI received a Primary Behavioral Health Care Integration grant from SAMHSA, enabling the organization to launch primary care services and embrace a whole-person wellness model, further supported by a Dartmouth InShape grant.
The History of NCADD-J
Founded in 1965, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence – Juneau (NCADD-J) played a pioneering role in shaping Alaska’s approach to substance use issues. The organization hosted the first Governor’s Conference on Alcoholism and, in partnership with the State Council of Churches, successfully advocated for the formation of a State Council on Alcoholism.
Over the following decades, NCADD-J provided Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services to various local employers and launched the Alcohol Information School—later evolving into the Alcohol and Drug Information School (ADIS). Through the 1980s and 1990s, NCADD-J secured numerous grants and contracts to enhance substance use prevention services and also piloted Juneau’s first Wellness Court in the early 2000s.
A Unified Future
In 2018, NCADD-J merged with JAMHI to become JAMHI Health & Wellness, Inc., combining their strengths and resources to offer integrated behavioral health and primary care services, committed to promoting holistic wellness for the communities they serve.
