Introduction
The Hospital Billing Medical Coder plays a key role in ensuring precise documentation and accurate reimbursement within healthcare organizations. As a Hospital Billing Medical Coder, you will review patient records, assign correct diagnostic and procedural codes, and help maintain compliance with CMS and payer regulations. This position supports efficient billing, reduces claim denials, and ensures optimal revenue cycle performance while collaborating closely with clinicians and administrative teams to enhance documentation quality and accuracy.


Responsibilities of a Hospital Billing Medical Coder

 

The Hospital Billing Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing patient medical records and assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services. You will ensure each record meets regulatory and payer requirements, supporting correct billing and reimbursement processes.

 

Additional duties include conducting quality checks, participating in audits, and identifying coding trends or discrepancies. The Hospital Billing Medical Coder will also collaborate with providers to clarify documentation and resolve coding issues efficiently.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze medical records to identify accurate codes for diagnoses and procedures.
  • Assign and sequence codes according to ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS guidelines.
  • Ensure coding accuracy to support timely and correct billing.
  • Collaborate with clinicians to clarify documentation.
  • Stay current with regulatory and payer requirements.
  • Conduct audits and maintain compliance with all coding standards.
  • Utilize EHR and coding software for accurate data entry.
  • Uphold HIPAA and confidentiality standards.

Qualifications for a Hospital Billing Medical Coder

 

To succeed as a Hospital Billing Medical Coder, candidates must demonstrate strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and commitment to quality.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent certification required.
  • 1–3 years of medical coding experience in outpatient, inpatient, or specialty settings.
  • In-depth understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in EHR systems and coding software (such as 3M, EncoderPro, Epic, or Cerner).
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
