This part-time, remote position is ideal for coders with expertise in ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS who want to contribute to improving coding compliance, accuracy, and data quality for veteran healthcare services. Auditors will provide education, guidance, and quality assessments for coding staff and clinical teams.

Key Responsibilities

Coding Audit and Quality Review

  • Perform audits of inpatient and outpatient medical records, ensuring accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS code assignment.

  • Assess coding compliance with VA-specific guidelines (VERA, PTF, Non-VA Medical Care).

  • Analyze MS-DRG, POA status, discharge disposition, and clinical documentation for accuracy.

  • Identify trends, discrepancies, and areas for coding improvement; provide recommendations.

Education and Consultation

  • Provide guidance and education to coding staff, clinicians, and facility personnel on coding best practices.

  • Support ongoing improvement of clinical documentation to ensure accurate reflection of patient care.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for professional and facility coding conventions.

Reporting and Collaboration

  • Develop audit reports, summaries, and presentations for leadership, coding staff, and clinical teams.

  • Collaborate with coders, clinical staff, and leadership to resolve coding and documentation issues.

  • Assist in process improvement initiatives related to coding, documentation, and compliance.


Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate degree or higher in Health Care.

  • Minimum 5 years of coding/auditing experience.

  • At least 2 years of VA-related coding experience, either as a VA employee or with a government contractor supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and coding principles.

Certifications (Required)

  • Apprentice/Associate level or Mastery Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC.

  • Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification through AHIMA or ACDIS is preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Expertise in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently in a remote, part-time capacity while meeting deadlines.

  • Commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality and adherence to HIPAA regulations.
