Position Summary:
Advocate Health is seeking a highly skilled Medical Coder II to accurately abstract and code professional services related to inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory physician (and mid-level provider) services. This includes special procedures in Emergency Rooms, Ambulatory Surgery, Day Hospitals, and various hospital departments. The role uses standardized ICD and CPT coding systems in compliance with federal regulations, payer guidelines, and internal policies to ensure appropriate billing and reimbursement.
Key Responsibilities:

Accurately abstract and assign ICD diagnosis and CPT procedure codes for hospital-based physician and mid-level provider services.

Ensure timely and accurate coding for inpatient and outpatient services using documentation from medical records.

Assign proper coding modifiers (e.g., GC, NO, NDU) per CMS Teaching Physician Guidelines.

Resolve pending charges and work through WakeOne coding and claim denial queues.

Maintain compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and other third-party payer requirements.

Remain current with updates to coding standards and payer regulations through professional development and continuing education.

Serve as a resource for junior coding staff and support peer learning.

Collaborate with Revenue Cycle and Compliance teams to address documentation and billing issues.

Educate physicians and providers on documentation best practices for accurate code assignment.

Perform additional coding and documentation-related tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years medical coding experience in a healthcare or hospital setting, or internal promotion eligibility based on meeting Level II Coder criteria for six consecutive months

Certification: Must possess one of the following national certifications:

Certified Professional Coder (CPC)

Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

Experience coding professional services in a teaching hospital environment

Familiarity with CMS Teaching Physician Rules

Understanding of provider-based clinic billing and facility fee services

Ability to meet and maintain department quality and productivity standards for a Coder II level

Strong understanding of Medicare billing requirements

Ability to work independently and meet coding deadlines

Team-oriented with strong communication and collaboration skills
