Key Responsibilities of a Medical Coding Specialist II

  • Assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and E/M codes using encoder and grouper software

  • Apply knowledge of NCCI edits, LCD/NCD directives, MUEs, and Medicare Teaching Physician Guidelines

  • Ensure compliance with coding regulations and institutional policies

  • Collaborate with providers to ensure documentation accuracy and completeness

  • Stay updated with coding changes, guidelines, and best practices


Qualifications for a Medical Coding Specialist II

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent with coding education or an active coding certification

  • Preferred: Associate’s Degree in a healthcare-related field

  • 1+ year progressive coding experience required (HCC-specific roles need HCC coding experience)

  • 2+ years of coding experience in multiple specialties preferred

Accepted Certifications: CPC, COC, CIC, CCS, CCS-P, CCA, CRC, RHIT, or RHIA
