Medical Laboratory Assistant

Job Description

Applications are invited from enthusiastic, motivated, and reliable individuals to join the Microbiology team at North Tyneside General Hospital as Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs).

MLAs are often the first point of contact for laboratory services, making a friendly and professional approach essential. This vital role supports scientific staff in the preparation, labelling, data entry, and processing of samples as well as in the operation and maintenance of lab equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, label, and process clinical samples for microbiological analysis.

  • Accurately enter patient and test request data into laboratory systems.

  • Perform manual and automated sample preparation procedures.

  • Conduct equipment cleaning, maintenance, and quality control checks.

  • Assist with general lab housekeeping including stock control and waste management.

  • Handle human biological materials (blood, urine, faeces, etc.) with proper safety precautions.

  • Always work within defined competencies and established protocols.

  • Strong attention to detail, ability to follow set procedures, and remain focused under pressure.

  • Good manual dexterity and computer literacy.

  • A calm, organised approach to work.

  • Prior NHS lab experience is beneficial but not essential – full training will be provided.

Working Environment

  • This is a 24/7 service, requiring participation in shift patterns covering nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • The role involves working closely with human biological samples and hazardous substances.

  • You will be part of a high-performing team across North Tyneside, Wansbeck, and Hexham hospitals, as well as community health centres across the region.
