Looking for a role that gets you out of the office and into the field? Join Northumbrian Water as a Meter Reader based in Durham. This full-time position (37 hours/week) offers a salary of up to £26,656 depending on experience and comes with both permanent and fixed-term contract options. As a Meter Reader, you’ll play a key role in customer service, visiting locations across your region to take accurate meter readings, answer customer queries, and replace or repair water meters. Your Role as a Meter Reader

As a Meter Reader, you will:

  • Travel across a designated region to complete accurate meter readings

  • Use handheld devices and tech tools to log readings and communicate with the team

  • Engage with customers, answer questions, and explain water consumption data

  • Inspect, replace, or repair meters when necessary

  • Prioritize safety while working independently in all weather conditions

  • Complete your daily work within varied hours (between 7 AM and 8 PM, Mon–Sun)

A valid UK driving licence is essential for this field-based role.

Skills & Qualities Needed for a Meter Reader

The ideal Meter Reader will have:

  • Great communication and customer service skills

  • Motivation to work independently and manage daily routes

  • Physical fitness for walking long distances and handling equipment

  • Calmness under pressure and a helpful, professional attitude

  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Flexibility to work varied shifts and some weekends

A DBS check will be required for the successful candidate.
