About the Role
Southern Methodist University (SMU) is seeking a Network Infrastructure Engineer to join its dedicated Infrastructure team. This hands-on position plays a key role in maintaining, securing, and enhancing the university’s network and computing systems that support academic, research, and administrative functions.
The engineer will manage complex network systems, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement forward-thinking solutions to ensure seamless, secure, and scalable network operations across campus. This is a dynamic opportunity for a motivated IT professional eager to grow their expertise in enterprise networking, infrastructure support, and system optimization within a collaborative academic environment.
Key Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain SMU’s wired and wireless network infrastructure for maximum uptime and performance.

Configure, manage, and monitor switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points.

Support and maintain enterprise network services, including VPN, DNS, DHCP, and load balancing.

Conduct troubleshooting, performance analysis, and optimization of network systems.

Collaborate with IT teams to enforce network security policies and ensure compliance with university and industry standards.

Maintain accurate network documentation, configuration records, and disaster recovery plans.

Stay up to date with emerging technologies in networking, cloud integration, and virtualization.

Provide technical support and guidance to IT staff and end-users as needed.
Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

3–5 years of professional experience in network infrastructure management.

Strong understanding of TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, and network security principles.

Experience with enterprise-grade networking hardware (Cisco, Juniper, or equivalent).

Certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent preferred.

Proficiency in troubleshooting complex network issues and configuring network devices.

Excellent communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.

Experience working in an academic or large enterprise IT environment is a plus.

Familiarity with cloud networking and virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Azure, AWS) is desirable.
