About the Job

Job Summary – Pharmacy Resident (PGY1)

This position is part of a one-year, ASHP-accredited post-graduate pharmacy residency program focused on developing clinical pharmacists capable of providing comprehensive medication-related care for patients with a wide variety of conditions. Through advanced education and training, residents will be eligible for board certification and potential PGY2 residency. This role combines direct patient care, medication distribution, education, and management, and utilizes core competency areas including patient care, leadership, practice advancement, and knowledge dissemination.

Overview of Responsibilities

The Pharmacy Resident will receive in-depth training across diverse clinical and operational settings within the Department of Pharmacy, including internal medicine, pediatrics, critical care, oncology, and central pharmacy operations. Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and verifying medication orders for all patients, including weekend and holiday shifts.

  • Participating in formulary reviews, drug utilization evaluations, and the presentation of evidence-based findings to appropriate committees.

  • Contributing to continuing education efforts for pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.

  • Publishing drug information resources and assisting with policy development.

  • Conducting medication histories, reconciliation, and counseling for patients and families.

  • Supporting safe transitions of care and documenting interventions in medical records.

  • Completing longitudinal activities such as teaching seminars, journal clubs, and a year-long research project.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy school.

  • Must obtain an unrestricted pharmacist license within 90 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with drug utilization review and Electronic Medical Records (EMRs).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and comfort with healthcare technologies.

  • Ability to function independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.

  • Understanding of clinical best practices, confidentiality standards, and patient-centered care.

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse patient populations and care teams.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, and light lifting (5–10 lbs).

  • Manual dexterity for medication handling and computer use.

  • Visual acuity for reading medications and digital interfaces.
