Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Accurately process prescription orders within the IHS Electronic Health Record (EHR), ensuring completeness, appropriate dosing, allergy screening, and overall clinical appropriateness.

  • Evaluate potential drug-drug and food interactions, contraindications, and patient-specific warnings; assess renal function for proper medication management.

  • Provide patient counseling to ensure safe and effective medication use.

  • Review patient profiles, monitor ongoing drug therapy, identify and resolve medication-related issues.

  • Verify the accuracy of medications prepared by pharmacy technicians.

  • Serve as a resource to clinical staff by offering medication-related information and educational support.

  • Support inventory management, with a focus on controlled substances and critical supplies.

  • Maintain thorough documentation and ensure compliance with security protocols for controlled substances.

  • Record and report adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and medication errors promptly.

  • Collaborate with specialty providers to enhance patient outcomes and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.

Skills & Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical care practices and medication management.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

  • Capable of working collaboratively with healthcare providers and patients.

  • Adaptability to evolving procedures and patient care needs.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy in recordkeeping.

  • Active, unrestricted pharmacist license in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited institution.

  • Proficiency with pharmacy information systems, including IHS EHR, RPMS, ScriptPro, and Omnicell.

  • Competence in general computer programs such as Microsoft Office, email, and internet applications.

  • Solid understanding of HIPAA regulations and confidentiality standards.

Demonstrated experience in:

  • Processing and dispensing prescriptions accurately and efficiently.

  • Providing medication counseling and patient education.

  • Managing pharmaceutical inventory and ensuring controlled substance security.

  • Offering clinical guidance to pharmacy staff.

  • Leading quality improvement initiatives and evaluating medication use practices.


Supervisory Responsibility

This role does not include supervisory duties.


Work Environment

  • Regular use of standard office and pharmacy equipment (computers, phones, copiers).

  • Requires standing, walking, sitting, bending, and computer use for extended periods.

  • Must be able to hear and communicate effectively through pharmacy windows with patients.
