Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Process prescription orders in the IHS Electronic Health Record (EHR), ensuring completeness, accuracy, proper dosing, and allergy checks.

  • Screen for potential drug-drug and drug-food interactions, contraindications, and warnings; assess renal function.

  • Counsel patients on the safe and effective use of medications.

  • Review patient profiles, monitor medication therapy, identify medication-related problems, and recommend solutions.

  • Ensure the accuracy of all pharmaceutical products prepared by technical staff.

  • Provide medication-related information and training to clinical staff.

  • Assist in the inventory control of pharmaceuticals and supplies, with a particular focus on scheduled pharmaceuticals.

  • Maintain records and ensure the security of controlled substances; document medication interactions and report adverse drug reactions (ADR) and medication errors.

  • Consult with specialty practitioners to optimize patient care and participate in quality improvement efforts.

  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate and comprehensive records.

  • A current, valid, unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in any U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy.

  • Familiarity with pharmacy computer systems (IHS EHR, RPMS, ScriptPro, Omnicell).

  • Proficiency in general computer applications (Microsoft Office, email, internet).

  • Understanding of medical privacy and confidentiality standards (HIPAA).

  • Demonstrated experience in:

    • Processing and dispensing medications.

    • Counseling patients on medication use.

    • Managing medication inventory and ensuring security.

    • Providing clinical direction to pharmacy personnel.

    • Conducting quality improvement and medication use evaluations.


Supervisory Responsibility

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment

  • Routine use of standard office equipment (computers, phones, photocopiers).

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, sit, and use computers for prolonged periods.

  • Effective communication through thick glass windows with patients.
