Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Accurately process prescription orders using the Indian Health Service (IHS) Electronic Health Record (EHR), verifying completeness, proper dosing, and allergy screening.

  • Evaluate prescriptions for drug-drug and food interactions, contraindications, and relevant clinical warnings, including renal function assessment.

  • Provide patient counseling on the safe and effective use of prescribed medications.

  • Review patient profiles to monitor therapy, identify medication-related issues, and recommend appropriate solutions.

  • Verify the accuracy of pharmaceutical products prepared by technical staff.

  • Serve as a clinical resource by providing medication-related education and support to healthcare professionals.

  • Support pharmaceutical inventory management, with particular attention to controlled substances.

  • Maintain accurate records related to controlled substances, document medication interactions, and report adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and medication errors.

  • Collaborate with specialty providers to optimize therapeutic outcomes and participate in quality improvement initiatives.

Skills and Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical services and medication therapy management.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with clinical staff and patients.

  • Adaptability in responding to evolving procedures and patient care needs.

  • High level of accuracy in maintaining comprehensive pharmacy records.

  • Active, unrestricted pharmacy license in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited institution.

  • Familiarity with pharmacy systems, including IHS EHR, RPMS, ScriptPro, and Omnicell.

  • Proficiency in general office applications such as Microsoft Office, email, and internet navigation.

  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and commitment to protecting patient privacy.

  • Demonstrated expertise in the following areas:

    • Dispensing and processing medications

    • Patient counseling on medication use

    • Inventory and controlled substance management

    • Clinical supervision of pharmacy personnel

    • Quality improvement initiatives and drug utilization evaluations


Supervisory Responsibility

This role does not include supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment

Work involves standard office and pharmacy equipment such as computers, phones, and copiers. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, and use a computer for extended periods. Clear communication with patients may be required through glass partitions.


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this role, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Frequent physical activity includes standing, walking, reaching, and using hands and arms to handle materials or operate equipment.
