Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Accurately process prescription orders using the Indian Health Service (IHS) Electronic Health Record (EHR), ensuring completeness, appropriate dosing, and allergy verification.

  • Evaluate prescriptions for potential drug-drug and food interactions, contraindications, and clinical warnings; assess renal function as needed.

  • Provide thorough patient counseling on the proper and safe use of medications.

  • Review patient profiles to monitor therapy, identify potential medication-related concerns, and recommend effective solutions.

  • Ensure the precision and quality of pharmaceutical products prepared by pharmacy technicians.

  • Serve as a clinical resource by delivering medication-related education and guidance to healthcare staff.

  • Support inventory management, with a focus on the handling and control of scheduled pharmaceuticals.

  • Maintain accurate records for controlled substances, document drug interactions, and report any adverse drug reactions (ADRs) or medication errors.

  • Collaborate with specialty providers to enhance patient outcomes and contribute to continuous quality improvement efforts.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy.

  • Familiarity with pharmacy systems such as IHS EHR, RPMS, ScriptPro, and Omnicell.

  • Proficiency in general computer applications including Microsoft Office, email, and internet navigation.

  • Solid understanding of HIPAA standards and patient confidentiality practices.

  • Demonstrated experience in:

    • Processing and dispensing medications

    • Counseling patients on proper medication usage

    • Managing pharmaceutical inventory and ensuring controlled substance security

    • Providing clinical guidance to pharmacy staff

    • Participating in quality assurance and medication utilization reviews


Supervisory Responsibility
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional office and pharmacy setting using standard equipment such as computers, phones, and copiers. The role requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and use a computer for extended periods. Clear communication with patients may occur through glass windows.


Physical Demands
The physical requirements of this role include regular speaking and listening. The position frequently involves standing, walking, reaching with arms and hands, and handling materials.
