Position Overview

This position supports healthcare services by ensuring the safe, accurate, and effective dispensing of medications while providing expert pharmaceutical care. The Pharmacist will operate within the Indian Health Service (IHS) Electronic Health Record (EHR) system and collaborate closely with clinical teams to improve patient outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately process prescriptions using the IHS EHR system, verifying completeness, dosing appropriateness, and allergy information.

  • Identify and assess drug-drug and food interactions, contraindications, renal dosing considerations, and potential warnings.

  • Educate patients on proper medication use, side effects, and safety precautions.

  • Review patient profiles and monitor therapy effectiveness, addressing and resolving medication-related concerns.

  • Verify the accuracy of prescriptions prepared by pharmacy technicians.

  • Serve as a resource for clinical staff, offering medication guidance and training.

  • Manage inventory, including controlled substances and scheduled medications.

  • Ensure compliance with all regulations regarding controlled substances, maintain accurate documentation, and report adverse drug reactions and medication errors.

  • Collaborate with specialty providers to optimize care and support ongoing quality improvement initiatives.


Skills & Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of pharmaceutical care, drug therapy, and patient counseling.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent problem-solving and clinical judgment abilities.

  • Collaborative approach to working with interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

  • Adaptability to changes in patient needs and organizational procedures.

  • Proficiency in recordkeeping and compliance documentation.

  • Active, unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in any U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA).


Education & Experience

  • Degree in Pharmacy (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate) from an ACPE-accredited program.

  • Hands-on experience with pharmacy systems including IHS EHR, RPMS, ScriptPro, and Omnicell.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and general computer usage.

  • Thorough understanding of HIPAA and medical privacy standards.

  • Demonstrated expertise in:

    • Dispensing and verifying prescription medications

    • Patient counseling and education

    • Inventory management and controlled substance security

    • Supporting and guiding pharmacy personnel

    • Conducting medication use evaluations and quality improvement efforts


Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Frequent use of standard office and pharmacy equipment (computers, phones, pill counters).

  • Must be able to walk, stand, sit, bend, and use a computer for extended periods.

  • Requires effective communication with patients, often through protective glass.
