Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Accurately prepare medications, including investigational and standard therapies, by reviewing physician orders and identifying any therapeutic incompatibilities.

  • Dispense medications by compounding, labeling, packaging, and ensuring proper documentation of pharmaceutical products.

  • Monitor drug therapies and intervene when necessary to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

  • Supervise pharmacy technicians by organizing workflows, verifying product preparation, and overseeing medication orders, charges, and unit inspections.

  • Serve as a pharmacological resource for healthcare providers and researchers; counsel patients on prescribed therapies.

  • Participate in clinical and research meetings to advance hospital staff’s knowledge of medications and protocols.

  • Ensure full compliance with all applicable federal and state drug laws and institutional policies. This includes:

    • Conducting regular nursing unit inspections

    • Managing controlled substance records and drug inventories

    • Disposing of expired or damaged pharmaceuticals

    • Maintaining current licensure and staying informed on legislation

    • Adhering to investigational drug protocol requirements

    • Maintaining aseptic conditions in sterile product preparation areas

    • Recording and reviewing temperature logs for cold storage

  • Collaborate with leadership to improve operations and support continuous quality improvement initiatives.

  • Contribute to research efforts and assist in mentoring pharmacy students or interns.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • A valid New York State Pharmacist license in good standing

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy setting, with emphasis on investigational drug management and sterile compounding

  • Strong proficiency in electronic health records, order entry systems, and controlled substance tracking platforms

  • Demonstrated experience dispensing controlled substances and utilizing automated drug dispensing systems

  • Ability to interpret clinical research protocols and dispense medications accordingly, independently and accurately

  • Capability to maintain meticulous pharmacy records and draft procedures without supervision

  • Flexibility to work on-site full-time with participation in the on-call schedule, which includes remote EHR access and occasional travel to the hospital after hours

  • Availability to accommodate variable medication administration schedules

  • Interest in academic collaboration, including publishing research and mentoring pharmacy trainees


Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certification in Sterile Compounding (BCSCP) or willingness to obtain certification

  • Demonstrated experience in scientific writing and research publication related to pharmacy or medical science


Compensation and Additional Information

Estimated Salary Range: Starting at $155,000/year, commensurate with experience, education, and licensure.
