Position Overview

Rockefeller University is seeking an experienced Hospital Pharmacist to support both standard care and research-based pharmaceutical operations in a dynamic academic medical environment. This full-time, on-site role involves the preparation, dispensing, and oversight of investigational and commercially approved medications, ensuring compliance with rigorous regulatory standards and contributing to cutting-edge biomedical research.


Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and dispense both investigational and standard-of-care medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders, identifying potential therapeutic incompatibilities, and compounding as necessary.

  • Ensure safe and accurate dispensing by packaging, labeling, and verifying pharmaceuticals in accordance with protocols.

  • Monitor patient drug therapies and recommend clinical interventions as appropriate.

  • Direct and verify pharmacy technicians’ workflow, medication preparation, order entries, and labeling.

  • Provide pharmacological guidance to healthcare professionals, researchers, and patients.

  • Participate in clinical research meetings to support the hospital staff’s and research teams’ knowledge of investigational therapies.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations set forth by the NYS Board of Pharmacy, DEA, FDA, NYS Department of Health, NIH, and other governing bodies.

  • Oversee and maintain comprehensive pharmacy operations, including:

    • Controlled substance inventory and records

    • Medication storage and removal of expired or damaged stock

    • Sterile product preparation and aseptic techniques

    • Inspection of nursing units and pharmacy areas

    • Temperature logs for refrigerated storage

    • On-call availability for emergency pharmacy issues

  • Support documentation, protocol compliance, and proper dispensing of clinical trial medications.

  • Collaborate with academic staff on publications and scientific writing projects.

  • Assist with training and mentoring of pharmacy interns and externs.

  • Contribute proactively to team initiatives and take on additional responsibilities as needed.


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy setting, with significant exposure to investigational and sterile drug product handling.

  • Active and unrestricted New York State pharmacist license.

  • Proficiency in hospital-based EHR systems, drug order entry software, and controlled drug inventory management.

  • Hands-on experience with automated dispensing systems and controlled substance protocols.

  • Ability to independently interpret clinical trial protocols and dispense medications per specific guidelines.

  • Strong documentation and procedure-writing skills.

  • Flexibility to work a non-hybrid, full-time schedule and participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, including remote access and potential on-site response.

  • Availability to accommodate medication administration schedules.

  • Demonstrated interest and ability to work in a research-oriented, academic environment, including writing and publishing scientific content.

  • Experience mentoring pharmacy students is strongly preferred.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certification in Sterile Compounding (BCSCP) or willingness to obtain certification.

  • Interest or prior experience in scholarly writing, publishing, and interdisciplinary collaboration in pharmacy and biomedical science.
