Position Summary

The Pharmacist is expected to demonstrate sound professional judgment and initiative, utilizing expertise in clinical medication use while considering the patient’s unique needs. The role involves reviewing and verifying physician drug orders and responding to medication requests from nursing staff. The pharmacist also supervises pharmacy assistants, ensuring the safe management of medications and the overall safety of the pharmacy department. This position includes managing costly medications, supplies, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Medication Administration & Distribution: Ensures the safe and efficient distribution of medications to patients, following best practices and guidelines.

  • Clinical Drug Information: Provides accurate and timely clinical drug information to physicians, nurses, and patients, supporting informed decision-making.

  • Order Interpretation: Interprets medication and treatment orders from physicians, ensuring accurate execution based on a direct copy of the order.

  • Medication Scheduling: May independently schedule the administration of medications when specific instructions are not provided by the physician, ensuring optimal therapeutic effects.

  • Patient Medication Monitoring: Maintains patient medication records and monitors therapy to ensure the safety and efficiency of prescribed treatments.

  • Supervision: Oversees the work of pharmacy technicians and assistants, ensuring adherence to protocols and accurate medication handling.

  • Compounding & Dispensing: Compounds prescriptions and prepares intravenous admixtures following accepted pharmaceutical techniques to ensure proper formulation and dosage.

  • Inventory Control: Assists in managing floor stock inventories, performing monthly inspections to ensure proper supply levels and medication safety.

  • Charge Document Preparation: Supports the preparation of patient charge documents for accurate billing and inventory tracking.

  • Order Verification: Verifies and approves physician drug orders and medication requests from nursing staff, ensuring accuracy and appropriateness.

  • Additional Duties: Performs any other duties as assigned, contributing to the smooth operation of the pharmacy department and patient care.
