Pharmacy Billing Technician

Job Summary

This position performs a full range of pharmaceutical billing and pharmacy technician duties at Oyate Health Center (OHC). Primary responsibilities include processing insurance claims using the RPMS Pharmacy Point of Sale (POS) system and supporting the pharmacy team in the safe and accurate dispensing of medications. This role ensures patients receive high-quality pharmaceutical care while maintaining regulatory and billing compliance.

Essential Functions

POS Billing Technician Duties

  • Manage and troubleshoot pharmacy point-of-sale (POS) billing through RPMS.

  • Edit and approve medical claims; verify diagnosis and insurance information.

  • Submit and correct claims to third-party payers, Medicaid, and responsible parties.

  • Research Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) and follow up on denied or unpaid claims.

  • Coordinate secondary billing, benefit verification, and data correction.

  • Provide audit documentation and respond to billing inquiries from patients and providers.

  • Train pharmacy staff on POS procedures and updates.

Pharmacy Technician Duties

  • Educate patients on medication usage, refills, side effects, and insurance coverage.

  • Repackage pharmaceuticals into unit-dose or pre-packaged formats.

  • Maintain accurate inventory, monitor expiration dates, and manage stock rotation.

  • Process orders, replenish dispensing systems, and label medications.

  • Enter patient and prescription data into the pharmacy system.

  • Dispense prescriptions under pharmacist supervision at the pharmacy counter.

Clerical & Support Duties

  • Answer phones and assist visitors at the pharmacy.

  • Update RPMS drug files for billing compliance (e.g., NDC numbers).

  • Comply with HIPAA and other regulatory standards.

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Requirements & Skills

  • Strong understanding of pharmacy billing systems, POS workflows, and RPMS.

  • Proficient in pharmacy inventory systems and prepackaging equipment.

  • Clear knowledge of Medicaid and third-party billing rules.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse populations, especially American Indian communities.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
