Program Overview:
Since 2016, Correctional Health Services (CHS) has been providing healthcare in NYC jails, focusing on human dignity and patient rights. As part of NYC Health + Hospitals, CHS is integral to the City’s criminal justice reform efforts. The Outposted Therapeutic Housing Units (OTxHU) offer a groundbreaking approach to providing high-quality care to patients with complex health needs. Located in three acute care facilities, the OTxHU bridges care between jails and inpatient hospitalization. The OTxHU at Bellevue will open by the end of 2024, providing a unique opportunity to join a passionate team supporting marginalized communities.

Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Site Medical Director, the Physician will provide comprehensive care to patients with chronic and acute conditions in a unique correctional healthcare setting. This role involves primary care, managing complex diseases, and working in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses

  • Conduct comprehensive histories, physical exams, and develop treatment plans

  • Order and interpret lab tests, radiology exams, and EKGs

  • Collaborate with Physician Assistants and supervise clinical tasks as needed

  • Ensure all consults, orders, and progress notes are completed and signed

  • Respond to emergencies and document patient refusals of care

  • Conduct special housing rounds and maintain quality care standards

  • Teach patients about their conditions and treatment options

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain clinical competency

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience, including residency in a related specialty

  • Experience in skilled nursing or residential care settings

  • Experience with patients with mental illness, substance use disorders, and trauma-informed care

  • Strong communication and shared decision-making skills

  • Completion of residency in internal or family medicine

  • Familiarity with harm reduction approaches and opioid use disorder treatments

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited medical school

  • Completed residency or fellowship in a relevant specialty and board-certified/board-eligible

  • Licensed to practice medicine in New York

  • 5 years of relevant medical experience
