Senior Physician – Outposted Therapeutic Housing Units (OTxHU)
New York City Health + Hospitals’ Correctional Health Services (CHS) is seeking compassionate, skilled physicians to join the groundbreaking OTxHU program. Launched in 2016, CHS delivers comprehensive healthcare to NYC jail populations, emphasizing dignity and patient rights. The OTxHU initiative bridges care between jails and inpatient hospitals, providing specialized treatment for patients with complex chronic conditions at three NYC Health + Hospitals acute care sites, beginning with Bellevue in Manhattan by late 2024.
Role Overview:
Reporting to the Site Medical Director, the Physician will deliver primary care to incarcerated patients with chronic illnesses, performing histories and physicals, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions, coordinating consults, and working closely with an interdisciplinary team. The position involves collaboration with Physician Assistants, review of specialty consults, and ensuring high standards of care. Staff may also support CHS jail locations to maintain continuity of care.
Key Responsibilities:

Diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic illnesses

Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and document care plans

Order and interpret diagnostic tests; manage medications and referrals

Collaborate with Physician Assistants and clinical team for patient care
-
Review consults and hospital returns to ensure follow-through
-
Prepare patient transfer documentation and special needs referrals

Educate patients on conditions, treatments, and risks; document refusals

Respond promptly to emergencies and complete special housing rounds

Uphold quality standards, participate in CME and training

Maintain licensure, certifications, and professional conduct
Preferred Qualifications:
-
3-5 years of relevant clinical experience, including residency in primary care or related specialty

Experience in residential/skilled nursing or mental health care
-
Familiarity with substance use treatment and harm reduction
-
Knowledge of trauma-informed care and patient-centered decision-making
-
Strong teamwork and communication skills with multidisciplinary teams and correctional staff

Board certified/eligible in internal medicine, family medicine, or equivalent
Minimum Qualifications:

Medical degree from an accredited school

Completion of approved residency/fellowship and Board certification or eligibility

Minimum five years of relevant clinical experience

Licensed to practice medicine in New York State
