Job Opportunity: Physician – Outposted Therapeutic Housing Units (OTxHU) Program

Since 2016, CHS has provided healthcare within NYC jails, delivering comprehensive medical, mental health, and reentry support. As part of a groundbreaking initiative, CHS is launching Outposted Therapeutic Housing Units (OTxHU) across three NYC Health + Hospitals acute care facilities. This program bridges jail healthcare and inpatient hospitalization for patients with complex health needs, with CHS managing care and the Department of Correction overseeing security.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Site Medical Director, the Physician will deliver compassionate, comprehensive care to patients with chronic and acute illnesses in the jail system and OTxHU. Responsibilities include conducting patient histories and physicals, diagnosing and treating illnesses, ordering tests and consults, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and ensuring continuity of care. Physicians may also support care within jail-based CHS locations.
Key Responsibilities:

Diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic conditions.

Conduct thorough admission assessments and document care plans.

Coordinate consults and interpret diagnostic tests.

Supervise and collaborate with Physician Assistants.

Ensure compliance with medical protocols and quality standards.

Participate in emergency response and special housing rounds.

Maintain licensure, certifications, and participate in ongoing training.
Preferred Experience:
-
3-5 years in relevant clinical practice or residency.

Experience with skilled nursing or residential care settings.

Working with patients with serious mental illness or substance use disorders, including harm reduction knowledge.

Familiarity with trauma-informed care and quality improvement.

Strong communication and interdisciplinary teamwork skills.
Minimum Qualifications:

Medical degree from an accredited school.

Completed residency or fellowship; Board eligible or certified.

Licensed to practice in New York State.

Minimum 5 years of relevant clinical experience.
