Plumber

Position Summary

The Columbia VA Health Care System, Engineering Service, is hiring a Plumber to install, modify, and repair utility, supply, and disposal systems. This role also involves planning layouts for new installations and modifications, ensuring safety, functionality, and compliance with federal standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Install, modify, and repair water, gas, oil, sewage, and disposal systems.

  • Work with fixtures such as water closets, tubs, sinks, showers, and fire sprinkler systems.

  • Plan layouts using building plans, blueprints, and sketches.

  • Route and place piping systems, determine slope and alignment, and install valves, traps, and unions.

  • Seat, hook up, and test equipment for proper operation.

  • Perform installations and repairs from ladders, scaffolds, and tight spaces.


Work Schedule

  • Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (subject to change based on agency needs).


Physical Requirements

  • Stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and climb while working in tiring or uncomfortable positions.

  • Lift, carry, and set up tools/equipment weighing up to 40 lbs.

  • Work in confined and hard-to-reach places.


Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. citizenship required.

  • Subject to background investigation, drug testing, and probationary period.

  • Selective Service registration (for males born after 12/31/1959).

  • Complete online onboarding process if selected.

  • Participation in VA’s annual influenza program required (with exemption options).


Qualifications

  • No specific education requirement.

  • Must demonstrate sufficient plumbing knowledge, skills, and ability through experience (paid or volunteer).

  • Skills assessed include:

    • Equipment assembly, installation, and repair

    • Blueprint reading and interpretation

    • Measurement and layout

    • Technical practices and troubleshooting

    • Tool use and maintenance

  • Experience in both residential and commercial plumbing will be credited.
