Prior Authorization Specialist

Key Responsibilities

  • Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits.

  • Request, track, and secure prior authorizations for prescriptions.

  • Ensure approvals are obtained before prescriptions leave the pharmacy.

  • Communicate insurance updates and trends to the team.

  • Document all communications with patients, providers, and insurers accurately.

  • Respond to patient and staff inquiries regarding prior authorizations.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve authorization roadblocks, including contacting physicians.

  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.

  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical billing, basic coding, and office procedures.

  • Proficient in computer software, office equipment, and multi-line phone systems.

  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills.

  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively with patients, staff, and the public.

  • Fluency in English (reading, writing, and speaking).

Education & Experience

  • 1–2 years of relevant experience required.

  • Active Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB or NHA) required.

Physical Requirements

  • Indoor office environment with moderate noise.

  • Prolonged sitting and computer use.

  • Occasional travel to other office or operational sites.
