Responsibilities
- Administer chemotherapy, hydration, and other medications under the supervision of a physician.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of drug reimbursement procedures and ensure the completion of all chemotherapy charge forms.
- Obtain pre-authorization and necessary consent forms before administering therapies.
- Demonstrate expertise in the use, maintenance, and proper documentation of ambulatory infusion pumps, including cleaning after use.
- Facilitate dose modifications by assessing patients, reviewing lab results, consulting protocols or treatment plans, calculating dosages, and coordinating with physicians on necessary adjustments.
- Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central line catheter devices.
- Administer medications with precision, ensuring the correct product, dosage, route, time, and technique.
- Exhibit proficiency in chemotherapy administration and medication delivery, including venipuncture, central line access, and infusion devices. Program portable infusion pumps for continuous drug delivery and provide patient/caregiver instruction on pump use at home.
- Accurately document nursing assessments, patient education, and fluid/medication administration in patient records.
- Communicate relevant patient information and interventions to the physician.
- Triage patient phone calls, documenting all significant information in medical records.
- Assess patient and family needs, providing education and instructional materials to enhance understanding and care.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program.
- Active RN license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing in the practicing state.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Commitment to maintaining continuing education requirements.
- Minimum of two years of nursing experience required; oncology experience preferred.
