Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough health assessments of new inmates and initiate medical records, including Plans of Record (POR) for individuals with special healthcare needs.

  • Respond promptly to routine medical concerns and emergency situations, delivering appropriate clinical care.

  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with clinical protocols and physician directives.

  • Prepare examination rooms, medical equipment, and necessary documentation to support patient visits, and assist healthcare providers during exams as needed.

  • Ensure safe and accurate pharmacological practices in the preparation, administration, and documentation of medications and IV therapies.

  • Maintain and manage IV therapies in accordance with clinical standards.

  • Regularly collaborate with the Health Services Administrator (HSA) to review the scope and quality of care provided; may serve as Charge Nurse or Acting Supervisor in the absence of the HSA.

  • Demonstrate awareness of emergency protocols and execute triage procedures as outlined in facility guidelines.

  • Provide CPR and utilize AED equipment during emergencies; offer guidance and leadership in critical situations if trained.

  • Operate standard medical devices competently, including AEDs, EKG machines, blood pressure monitors, oxygen delivery systems, sterilization equipment, glucometers, Dopplers, and pulse oximeters.

  • Apply critical thinking to assess clinical problems and determine effective solutions.

  • Appropriately delegate tasks to licensed practical nurses or other support staff in accordance with scope of practice.

  • Educate patients on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, and the prevention of chronic health conditions.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program recognized by a state accrediting authority at the time of completion.

  • Current and unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse; license must be maintained in good standing.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in correctional healthcare is preferred but not required.

Employment Requirements

  • Current CPR/BLS certification.

  • Current TB test (completed within the past year).

  • Adherence to facility and company policies, including all protocols outlined in the Employee Handbook.

  • Willingness to work collaboratively with peers, provide support as needed, and work overtime when required.

  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient health information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.


Security Requirements

  • Must pass a background check and, if applicable, a pre-employment drug screening.

  • Must obtain and maintain facility security clearance as a condition of employment.

  • Completion of facility-specific safety training and orientation is required.


Physical and Mental Demands

This position requires the ability to:

  • Remain both stationary and mobile throughout the facility, including navigating stairs.

  • Physically position oneself for various clinical tasks and patient care activities.

  • Communicate clearly and exchange accurate information in a healthcare environment.

  • Detect and assess people, situations, and objects at varying distances.

  • Maintain composure and make sound decisions in high-pressure or crisis situations.

  • Lift and transport items weighing up to 50 pounds.


Work Environment
This role is based in a correctional facility and involves working in a secure, fast-paced environment where healthcare delivery and safety protocols intersect. The RN must be adaptable, compassionate, and capable of managing challenging situations with professionalism and care.
