Staff Nurse Inpatient

The Staff Nurse Inpatient role embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to the organization’s Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, and all applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.

This position is for a clinically proficient, registered professional nurse who delivers, coordinates, and delegates nursing care for acutely ill patients. Using the nursing process—including assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation—the Staff Nurse Inpatient ensures high-quality care while collaborating effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team. This role upholds the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of professional nursing practice.

Responsibilities:

  • Collects and analyzes patient data, establishes expected outcomes, develops individualized care plans, coordinates care delivery, and evaluates progress toward goals.

  • Directs patient care and ensures the appropriate use of support staff in delivering direct care.

  • Works collaboratively with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary staff, creating a documented, outcome-driven care plan that reflects shared decision-making.

  • Engages in shared governance, committee participation, and unit-based projects.

  • Evaluates and documents patient responses to interventions, adjusting the plan of care as necessary based on findings.

  • Applies the best available evidence, including research findings, to inform clinical decisions and enhance patient care.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

  • Current Registered Professional Nurse license in the State of Illinois

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities

  • An Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is acceptable with the commitment to complete a BSN from an accredited program within three years of starting in a clinical nurse role.
