Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilizing the nursing process to provide patient-centered, holistic care.

  • Collecting and evaluating patient data, promptly reporting critical values to the appropriate provider.

  • Assessing relevant laboratory and diagnostic results and identifying abnormal findings.

  • Documenting thorough and accurate physical assessments and observations.

  • Developing individualized care plans based on clinical assessments and patient needs.

  • Acting as a patient advocate and promoting family engagement in care.

  • Performing nursing interventions according to hospital policy and clinical guidelines.

  • Evaluating patient outcomes and adjusting care plans to achieve optimal results.

  • Ensuring adherence to all safety protocols while providing care and maintaining a safe environment.

  • Demonstrating professionalism in interactions with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

  • Maintaining open communication with nursing leadership and participating in performance improvement.

  • Carrying out additional responsibilities as assigned by nursing management.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State.

  • Current certifications from the American Heart Association in BLS, ACLS, and PALS.

  • TNCC certification.

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and Moderate Sedation certifications required within 3 months of hire.

  • Ability to walk or stand for 90% of the shift.

  • Physical capacity to lift patients (with or without assistance) and to push or move heavy equipment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN).

  • Recent experience in an Emergency Department setting.

  • NRP certification.

  • Prior to employment, candidates must:

    • Complete a pre-employment physical examination and receive medical clearance.

    • Pass a 4-panel drug screening.

    • Satisfy all regulatory pre-employment screening requirements.

    • Provide proof of all required licensure/certifications for New York State.

Failure to meet any of the above requirements may result in a delay or withdrawal of the employment offer. The Human Resources department will cover the cost of required medical examinations.

Employment Model – StaffCo Partnership

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital operates under a professional employer agreement with StaffCo, a licensed Professional Employer Organization (PEO). Under this agreement:

  • StaffCo serves as the employer of record for hospital employees, managing payroll, human resources, and benefits.

  • Stony Brook University Hospital functions as a co-employer, focusing on hospital operations, clinical care, and meeting all regulatory and licensure obligations.

While hospital employees are part of the private sector through StaffCo, this arrangement has been fully approved by New York State Civil Service and upheld by the U.S. National Labor Relations Board.
