Position Overview

South Shore Health is seeking a dedicated and experienced Registered Nurse to join our Surgical Services team. This role is essential in providing high-quality, patient- and family-centered care. The RN will be responsible for medication administration, care planning, documentation, patient advocacy, and ensuring a safe, compliant clinical environment.


Key Responsibilities

Medication Administration

  • Adheres to SSH policies for administering, transcribing, and documenting medications.

  • Completes medication reconciliation per hospital policy.

  • Accurately documents narcotic usage and manages discrepancies according to protocol.

Patient Care & Documentation

  • Develops, communicates, and updates individualized care plans based on patient needs.

  • Conducts admission assessments within 8 hours and identifies ongoing teaching needs.

  • Performs continuous reassessment of patient condition and adjusts care accordingly.

  • Documents patient care in compliance with SSH nursing policies and unit standards.

  • Assesses and documents patient pain levels using appropriate pain scales and interventions.

Patient Advocacy & Communication

  • Acts on behalf of the patient and family, raising ethical concerns when necessary.

  • Regularly updates the patient whiteboard to reflect the daily care plan.

  • Facilitates timely discharges/transfers and communicates any barriers through the appropriate channels.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promotes a “Culture of Safety” by following proper identification and time-out procedures.

  • Adheres to CDC hand hygiene and infection control protocols.

  • Ensures a safe and regulatory-compliant care environment at all times.

  • Demonstrates awareness of emergency protocols and MSDS access.

Professional Development

  • Maintains competency through ongoing education (minimum of 5 contact hours per year in the area of practice).

  • Practices within the legal scope of the MA Nurse Practice Act.

  • Fosters collaborative relationships with colleagues across disciplines.

Critical Thinking & Technology

  • Uses sound clinical judgment to analyze problems and select appropriate solutions.

  • Keeps current with policy updates and required software applications.

  • Demonstrates readiness to perform duties during system downtimes.

Compliance & Privacy

  • Operates within legal and ethical standards and complies with SSH privacy and security protocols.

  • Promptly reports potential compliance concerns to appropriate leadership.

  • Completes all required compliance training.

Patient and Family Engagement

  • Respects the values and needs of patients and their families as partners in care.

  • Encourages family involvement in all aspects of care, including during rounds and shift changes.

Age & Cultural Competency

  • Applies age-specific and culturally competent care.

  • Uses appropriate resources such as interpreter services to support patient understanding and comfort.


Qualifications

Education (Preferred):

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing

Experience:

  • Prior acute care RN experience preferred

  • Operating Room or Surgical Services experience required

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Current Massachusetts RN license

  • BLS required; ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, TCAR, or Emergency Response Training may be required depending on department assignment


Work Schedule

Options may include:

  • 36 hours/week, rotating Day/Night shifts (7:00 AM–5:00 PM or 7:00 AM–7:00 PM) with weekend and on-call rotation

  • 40 hours/week, rotating Day/Evening shifts (11:00 AM–11:00 PM or 3:00 PM–11:00 PM) with occasional night coverage as needed
