The Nootropic Foods Innovation, Brain Health and Lipid Bioinformatics Research Program is dedicated to improving agriculture productivity under control environment and field based production systems, food sustainability, nutrient security, nootropic/functional and plant based functional foods innovation or production, sensory perception, health benefit validation using animal or cell models of human health and diseases (Brain and Cancer), as well as support the community and industry to grow the health food sector of the province.

 

Responsibilities

The Research Manager, Nootropic Foods Innovation, Brain Health and Lipid Bioinformatics Research Program will be responsible for assisting the Principal Investigator with providing leadership, comprehensive management, planning, oversight and execution of the Nootropic Foods Innovation, Brain Health and Lipid Bioinformatics Research Program. The role will be accountable for the development of research protocols, and for ensuring their consistent application by overseeing research functions and providing training and guidance to research team. The Research Manager will contribute to research competitiveness by seeking out innovative approaches, as well as new funding opportunities and managing the grant application processes with the PI. The role will oversee the acquisition of funding, develop research budgets and monitor expenditures to ensure compliance with the research plan and funding agency guidelines. The Research Manager will facilitate collaborations with investigators and other partners to ensure the successful attainment of research objectives, and lead the analysis, compilation and dissemination of research results.

 

Education:

PhD in Analytical or Biological Chemistry with strong cellular biology, foodomics and/or lipidomics expertise or any equivalent combination of experience and education
Experience:

5 years of experience managing research initiatives/projects in an academic environment
Experience managing and monitoring research budgets and supervising graduate students in a laboratory environment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Understanding of current directions and issues in cell biology, lipidomics, foodomics and functional or nootropic foods analysis
In-depth knowledge of techniques for planning, managing and coordinating research projects, with competing priorities that involve a variety of stakeholders
Familiarity with financial principles and budgeting with the ability to ensure expenditures and resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications when required
In-depth knowledge of the regulations and guidelines governing research in an academic environment and of best practices for reviewing and writing grant proposals
In-depth knowledge of techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database
Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one’s own unit
Communication skills with the ability to converse with, complete detailed analytics and reports for, and deliver presentations to all levels of the organization
Ability to ensure confidentiality and privacy is maintained through the appropriate retention and destruction of information
Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive
A desire to grow and advance skills, which is demonstrated by attending conferences and other professional development opportunities
Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the research group’s events and activities
Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software that achieves required outcomes and is in line with best practices
Ability to delegate work and provide team members with clear direction and support in meeting their objectives
Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
Ability to research new avenues of funding from federal granting agencies, industry and other funding sources
Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve research goals
Familiarity with University research policies and practices
