Job Description

H-E-B is looking for energetic and motivated individuals to join our team as Store Department Leads. In this leadership role, you’ll help supervise department operations, ensure superior customer service, and train and develop Partners.

As a Department Lead, you’ll maintain well-stocked, well-merchandised departments while supporting your team and promoting safety, cleanliness, and food quality. You’ll also step into managerial responsibilities and help drive department success and sales growth.

What You’ll Do

Leadership & Operations

  • Serve as backup to Department Manager; often work the opposite shift

  • Help prepare schedules and coordinate daily work

  • Train Partners, address concerns, resolve issues, and ensure smooth department workflow

  • Maintain inventory, move product, and support production planning

  • Perform departmental technical tasks and Representative/Specialist duties as needed

Customer Service & Sales

  • Deliver and coach superior customer service

  • Answer product-related questions and take customer orders

  • Use suggestive selling techniques to grow sales

  • Effectively merchandise products

Food Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure quality and freshness of products

  • Slice, package, label, and rotate products

  • Maintain cleanliness of display cases, prep areas, and equipment

  • Comply with all food safety, sanitation, and H-E-B standards

Specialized Department Responsibilities

Responsibilities vary by department such as Bakery, Deli, Produce, Prepared Foods, Floral, Texas Backyard, etc.

  • Bakery: Assist in baking, decorating, and product quality control

  • Deli: Manage service case, back-of-house operations, and ordering

  • Produce: Lead in-store production and processing teams

  • Beauty: Stay up to date on hair, skin, and makeup trends

  • Texas Backyard: Apply strong nursery and plant knowledge

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Age 18+

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent education/training

  • 6+ months of related experience

  • Completion of Company Orientation, Food Safety & eCommerce training

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal communication

  • Ability to train, delegate, and manage responsibilities

  • Knowledge of equipment use and department-specific tasks

  • Strong documentation, reading, writing, and reporting skills

  • Problem-solving and adaptability in a fast-paced retail setting

Physical Demands

Varies by department (Bakery, Grocery, Deli, Floral, etc.)

  • Ability to lift and manage items between 15–85 lbs based on area

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching

  • Exposure to wet, cold, hot, or noisy environments depending on section
