About the Role:
Metro is seeking a skilled Senior Accountant to perform complex accounting, payroll, and financial analyses and reporting of the agency’s financial transactions. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy of Metro’s financial and payroll records, contributing to critical financial processes and reports.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct complex accounting, budget, grant billing, and payroll research and analyses.
- Review and validate the accuracy of financial, receivable, payable, and payroll records.
- Analyze complex grant agreements, bond issues, and other financial contracts.
- Prepare and present various financial, cost allocation, labor, and management reports.
- Monitor and analyze financial data, including general ledger reconciliations.
- Recommend or approve journal and adjusting entries.
- Provide audit support and communicate accounting and reporting issues.
- Prepare audit schedules and analyses.
- Identify and develop accounting processes to improve system utilization and reporting efficiency.
- Evaluate accounting systems for compliance with laws and regulations.
- Prepare and review procurement requirements.
- Respond to inquiries and liaise with various stakeholders.
- Design, develop, and implement required financial reports.
- Participate in the implementation and enhancement of automated financial systems.
- Assist in developing accounting/payroll forms, systems, policies, and procedures.
- Provide guidance, coaching, and training to assigned staff.

Minimum Qualifications:
- A combination of education and/or experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
- Three years of relevant experience in accounting performing financial analysis or governmental financial reporting; specialized experience may be required for some positions.
- A valid California Class C Driver License or alternative transportation.
- CPA and/or CMA preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience applying GAAP and/or GASB in financial statement preparation and analysis.
- Experience using accounting software such as Oracle E-Business Suite.
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, logical formulas).
- Experience analyzing and applying contractual requirements for grants and funding.
- Experience preparing financial statements (balance sheets, income statements, cash flows).
Essential Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong knowledge of governmental accounting principles, financial reporting, auditing, budgeting, information systems, grants billing, project accounting, payroll processes, and labor laws.
- Familiarity with relevant local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Proficiency in query tools, advanced spreadsheets, and report creation.
- Understanding of supervisory principles.
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to interact professionally with all levels and external representatives.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Proficiency in operating computers and office equipment.
