Position Overview

The Senior Controller – Hospitals works directly with the VP/System Controller to prepare and complete financial reports, supporting the CFO and senior leadership with financial analysis that drives strategic decision-making for the MLH system of companies and investments.

This role partners closely with facility CFOs, multiple Finance departments, MLH Divisions, and external auditors/tax consultants to complete system-wide audits, Federal/State grant audits, and tax returns. The Senior Controller is also responsible for ensuring GAAP compliance, internal controls, and leading a high-performing corporate accounting team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparation of financial reports and external disclosures

  • Ensure accurate GAAP-based monthly statements and cost center reports

  • Coordinate annual system-wide audit and Federal/State grant audits

  • Oversee preparation of IRS Form 990/990T for non-profit companies with external tax consultants

  • Monitor changes in tax law and grant compliance requirements

  • Collaborate with divisions including Supply Chain, Revenue, IT, HR/Payroll, and Legal

  • Maintain internal controls and financial systems integrity

  • Lead, mentor, and evaluate Corporate Accounting staff to achieve organizational goals

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (required)

  • Master’s Degree in Accounting (preferred)

Experience:

  • 8+ years of Accounting experience

  • Public Accounting experience preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required (AICPA membership preferred)

Skills & Abilities:

  • Expertise in GAAP and auditing standards

  • Strong financial systems knowledge (ERP, reporting tools)

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel & Office tools

  • Excellent written and verbal communication across all levels

  • Leadership ability to motivate and manage accounting teams

  • Strong problem-solving and long-range planning skills

Physical & Work Environment

  • Light work: lifting up to 25 lbs occasionally

  • Office-based with minimal exposure to adverse conditions

  • Requires computer use, data analysis, and extensive reading
