Company Overview
The Institute’s mission is to: undertake data science research at the intersection of computer science, mathematics, statistics and systems engineering; provide technically informed advice to policy makers on the wider implications of algorithms; enable researchers from industry and academia to work together to undertake research with practical applications; and act as a magnet for leaders in academia and industry from around the world to engage with the UK in data science and its applications. The Institute is headquartered at The British Library, at the heart of London’s knowledge quarter, and will bring together leaders in advanced mathematics and computing science from our growing universities network and other partners. Its work is expected to encompass a wide range of scientific disciplines and be relevant to a large number of business sectors.
The Role
The Defence & National Security (D&NS) theme at the Turing is looking to expand its Applied Research Group (ARG), working on real-world cybersecurity and machine learning problems for defence and national security stakeholders.
As a team, ARG aims to apply cutting edge research to real-world problems. We use research papers and code repositories to implement the latest developments in machine learning to pressing real-world problem sets, outputting feasibility studies, code repositories and supporting documentation. Projects vary in scale, from literature reviews to early-stage research engineering and longer-term proofs-of-concepts. Day-to-day, ARG collaborate closely with partners’ technical and subject matter experts as well as academics from across the Turing’s research community.
We are looking to hire a Senior Data Scientist to manage a newly established applied data science portfolio for one of ARG’s partners. This role will involve working closely alongside ARG’s Theme Lead alongside frequent stakeholder engagement.
Your Profile
The successful candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent experience and/or qualifications) in a relevant area which will include computer science, data science, mathematics or similar inter-disciplinary subjects. To be successful in this role, the post holder will need project management experience and be adept in some programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, HTML, Rust or similar. We are seeking someone with excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex or technical information.
The successful candidate will need to already hold developed vetting (DV). Eligibility criteria and further information on the process can be found on the UK Government security vetting website.
