Senior Database Administrator

About the Role

The University of Iowa Health Care Information Systems (HCIS) is seeking a Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to join our Enterprise Analytics Division. In this role, you will manage, optimize, and support large-scale databases and data warehouse systems that power healthcare delivery, education, and research.

You will work with Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and Epic Caboodle to ensure high availability, performance, integrity, and security of our data platforms. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain databases, data warehouses, and analytic applications.

  • Build and support ETL/ELT processes to automate data integration and reporting.

  • Optimize SQL Server queries, stored procedures, and functions for high-volume environments.

  • Support Epic Caboodle and Clarity platforms, including vendor-supplied ETL processes and custom modifications.

  • Develop and maintain Power BI components including Dataflows, DAX measures, and Semantic Models.

  • Contribute to the adoption of Microsoft Fabric and cloud-based data storage/analytics.

  • Ensure data accuracy, security, and compliance across all platforms.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver analytic solutions for healthcare operations, education, and research.

  • Provide documentation, participate in system upgrades, and offer off-hours support as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, Engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • 2–4 years of hands-on experience with relational databases using SQL and procedural languages.

  • Strong knowledge of relational database design, complex SQL DML/DDL, and query optimization.

  • Proven experience with Microsoft SQL Server administration and development.

  • Ability to interpret query execution plans for performance tuning.

  • Working knowledge of Power BI.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Skills

  • Cloud experience in Microsoft Fabric (OneLake, Synapse, Data Factory, Power BI solution architecture).

  • Experience with SSIS and implementing source/version control.

  • Hands-on experience with Epic EHR systems, particularly Caboodle and Clarity analytics platforms.
