Financial Management Consultant – National Education Association (NEA)

The NEA, the nation’s largest professional employee organization, seeks a highly skilled Financial Management Consultant to support its mission of advancing public education. This role involves providing expert accounting, financial, and business management services to NEA’s financial operations, state affiliates, and associated organizations.

Position Summary:

You will consult on accounting, auditing, financial management, and regulatory compliance, offering technical expertise in financial statement analysis, internal controls, and best business practices. Key responsibilities include coordinating audit preparations, conducting financial analyses and forecasting, preparing financial statements, facilitating financial trainings for leaders, performing fiscal health reviews, and resolving financial challenges. You may also lead cash flow management reviews, contribute to system enhancements, and ensure timely regulatory filings (federal, state, local taxes, DOL, FEC). Staying abreast of emerging financial issues and providing recommendations is crucial. Some travel is required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional accounting and financial management experience, including general ledger, accounts payable, account analysis, bank reconciliation, cash flow management, forecasting, and financial statement preparation.
  • Advanced experience with financial management systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, SAP, Oracle).
  • CPA, CMA, or IIA designation with auditing and tax preparation experience.
  • Familiarity with Department of Labor and Federal Election Commission regulations (preferred).
  • Ability to work extended hours periodically.
  • Submission of work samples may be required.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Tier 1 (Essential): Strong experience as a Controller or Financial Analyst applying GAAP, GAAS, FASB, and relevant regulations. Proven skills in diverse accounting, financial management, and complex problem-solving. Expertise in general ledger, financial statements, and audit preparation using advanced spreadsheets (Excel preferred). Experience in business process design, benchmarking, regulatory compliance, and financial audits. Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills, including public speaking. Ability to manage multiple complex projects under tight deadlines.
  • Tier 2 (Significant): Knowledge of non-profit accounting and grant tracking. Skill in developing financial training and presentations. Effective organizational and project management abilities. Experience interpreting IRS Form 990/5500 and DOL Form LM2 rules.
  • Tier 3 (Desirable): Familiarity with NEA’s financial and membership services environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and knowledge of FEC reporting and PAC accounting.
